UTM strives to expand its research horizon by aligning its research niche areas, supported by five strategic objectives, to go beyond ranking and numbers, and to spread our knowledge beyond our campus. UTM applies the idea of Translational Research via our core strength in engineering via the concept of applied knowledge to address industrial and societal issues as we strongly believe that translational research can be applied anywhere. Although the idea of Translational Research is new in UTM, we already have a number of showcases of what we have “translated” from our research. Our research is inspired by the five major niche areas and five R&I strategies that we have devised based on our unique strengths in research, and, more importantly with the vision of addressing the national and global grand agendas.
Why Expanding the Research Horizon?
In UTM, we believe in knowledge empowerment and dissemination to all levels of community. By expanding our research horizon, UTM seeks to promote knowledge generated through intensive, high impact research & innovation to beyond the boundary of our campus. We draw out inspiration from the fact that gases expand in all direction, bounded by the container. It is true, in our institutional spirit that, knowledge, like gas, should expand and propagate in all direction. Gone are the days where universities only care about the immediate output of research such as impact factor and publications. In the modern world, we are also answerable to secondary and tertiary output such as societal impact and contribution to the countries' innovation ecosystem. We do realize that "Expanding the Research Horizon" is a big and bold statement, but in UTM, we are now looking beyond traditional role of university in research & innovation and collectively, we hope others could join us in realizing our worldly responsibilities in ensuring knowledge sustainability as well as in the world hereafter.
How Do We Expand the Research Horizon?
Two words; Translational Research. We believe that, although most research start with the main objective of answering some questions, ultimately, the knowledge from the laboratory and publications will find its way to our daily life; one way or another. Medical research community had coined the idea of translational research since 2000's due to the nature of medicinal research which include several stages of "translation" from lab to clinical test, and from clinical test to bedside application.

However, with exception of the "translation" stages, translational research, can be applied to any branch of sciences or social sciences. Starting with fundamental science research, we understand how a natural phenomenon works, how a certain material works. From the understanding, we are able to apply the knowledge to solve real world problems through innovative technology or unconventional approach. The know-how, including the fundamental knowledge and the "applied" knowledge are being transferred to the communities and industries in making production more efficient and life easier. We encourage our researcher to set their sight beyond sight, and have a world view of their respective research expertise in realizing our vision of expanding the research horizon.
